Short trips (under a week)

Turn the water heater to vacation mode. Set thermostat to 17°C minimum in winter. Close laundry-machine supply valves.

Long trips

Shut off the main water supply at the basement valve. Drain the system by opening the lowest faucet. Turn the water heater fully off (or vacation mode for gas).

Winter departures

Everything above plus: leave the heat on at 15°C minimum, ask a neighbour to check daily, and consider a smart water-leak shut-off device.

Is shutting off the main always safe?

Yes for short and long trips. Just remember to turn it back on slowly to avoid water hammer.
